Sail Away With Me by Kerry Linder

This is one of three new releases presented by this upstart, New York-based record label, specializing in Brazilian and American jazz. On this nicely flowing session, vocalist Kerry Linder and her ensemble, including harmonica ace, Hendrik Meurkens, and cellist Erik Friedlander take on the world of Brazilian jazz.

Ms Linder sings in English and displays the proper accents and inflections when vocalizing in Portuguese. In effect, she’s a smooth operator, possessing a crystalline vocal style, via an airy and unhurried mode of execution. Many of these works are founded upon soft woodwinds, gently pulsating rhythms, accordion interludes, contrasting accents and other embellishments. Ms Linder gives Horace Silver’s classic jazz tune, "Song For My Father," a mid-tempo, yet peppery Brazilian type overhaul. Here, she scats in Portuguese as this piece also features trumpeter Michael Phillip Mossman’s profoundly stated lines.

Overall, Ms Linder adds just enough spice to the entire program without saturating the sequence of events, with overly lush ornamentations. It’s a well-balanced program, outlined with gobs of sentiment, where individual soloists are highlighted on a per track basis. (Recommended.... )
