The 18 tracks seem hardly enough after you have listened to them, and I mean that in good way. You just feel empty and wanting for more when the music stops, and that’s the way it should be.
Etta’s accompaniment was ready to shift back and forth from the blues, jazz, and rhythm & blues as quickly as the tone of her voice changed during a song. She had a smoke-filled-room classy tonality that I found as pleasing as I did alluring. She truly was a treasure of American jazz that everyone whom appreciates great jazz music should stop and listen to. Although she was underappreciated when she was alive, I am sure that tributes such as this will prove to change that mindset and put such a wonderful singer in the light that she belongs.
