The Birth of Sprawl by Rita di Ghent

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Rita di Ghent and her band are booked for just about every major Canadian Jazz Festival this summer. This very throaty (is that a word?) singer swings along in a delightful way with some fine Toronto musicians including Nick Ali-trumpet/flugelhorn, Louis Simao-bass, John Obercian-drums and the superb David Restivo on piano and B3 organ. Rita di Ghent is a true original. Many of her own compositions are included on this recording with a couple of standards thrown in for good measure.

Her composition, "$20.00 Ring" is absolutely captivating. Another grabber is Rita's unique twist on the Miles Davis' "So What" which she titles "So What The Funk". Listen to the beautiful solo by Nick "Brownman" Ali. This vocalist is a coveted Canadian treasure.
