The Essence of Nancy Wilson (Sampler) by Nancy Wilson

The burnished, sexy, sultry, voice of balladeer Nancy Wilson has been part of the American popular music scene for half a century. At home in jazz, pop, and rhythm and blues circles, Wilson has been a very successful recording artist for Capitol Records. To commemorate her fifty years in the music business, Capitol has compiled a four disc retrospective of her work, The Essence of Nancy Wilson.

In addition better-known favorites such as "Save Your Love For Me" recorded with Julian "Cannonball" Adderly, as would be expected, never before released material is also included. From the Sampler CD reviewed here, of particular note is a live performance of "I Can’t Get Started," from Wilson’s 1968 album Live at the Sands. Wilson’s version is rather unique in that she includes the seldom-heard verse of this song. Also real gems that are included are previously unreleased live versions of her classic ballad "Guess Who I Saw Today," and "When Did You Leave Heaven," both from her Live in Japan album.

While the sampler CD reviewed here contains only 12 of the total 80 songs represented on the 4 disc set, if this small sample is any indication of what else is in store for the listener, The Essence of Nancy Wilson would definitely be a must-have for fans of this incredible singer, and a great introduction for those less familiar with her voice and artistry.
