Yours by Sara Gazarek

Always nice to hear fresh faces and fresh vocals done not only to their own songs but to classics as well. Sara Gazarek, the 23-year-old newcomer who has been getting a lot of press lately and justly has put together a solid package of eleven songs ranging from her own to standards to a Lennon/McCartney that comes off brilliantly.

Starting off with "My Shining Hour," this is an upbeat song as Gazarek rolls through it wonderfully. Song two "Yours" written by pianist Joshua Nelson is kept together by the drumming of Matt Slocum who lists Max Roach as one of his influences and it shows. Track five is a Cole Porter cover " Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye" which Gazarek takes the vocal styles of Porter with the lower/upper tone changes but makes it her own.

It is great to see that jazz artists are going into other catalogues than just the standard catalogues. From the Joni Mitchell penned "The Circle Game’ to "Blackbird/ Bye Bye Blackbird" combo, we are seeing different spins on songs that normally would not mold or fit into the accepted jazz styles or community. Speaking of "Blackbird," Nelson pulls of the piano part wonderfully and bassist Erik Kertes plays his intro with a bow, excellent.

Finally, "You Are My Sunshine." Like mentioned previously, bringing new ways to sing and perform, even though a simple little song. This album is bright and refreshing.... it is "All Or Nothing At All."
