Yahboy! transports nice, light and rhythmical jazz type heads that sound sweet, and at times full of fun. "Pearls of Wisdom" puts on a show in a noticeable and attractive way with tropical jazzy dexterity played on the keyboards. This album reflects Gibson’s "Pan Pilgrimage" to Trinidad & Tobago resulting in melting jazz composition with sparkling Caribbean sounds.
Gibson grooves easily with his cohorts, improvising (montuna type for instance) as well as with Brecker influenced tenor player Rich Cole, making the music of this album in general quite predictable.
Nevertheless, Gibson's innovativeness will make the audience dance with his pans and percussion and for Yahboy! he does it all with his cats: Richard Warner, Steve Rice, Dean Schmidt, and Mark Ivester on drums. The CD features as guest, the brilliant Rich Cole, Bill Anschell, Dawn Clement, Chuck Deardorf, Michael Bento and Jeff Busch.
On "Uncommon Denominator," "A Friday in Tunapuna" and "A little Poem for You," Gibson delights the listener with a beautiful clothing of Caribbean music mixed in with an effervescent rhythmical orchestration.
The essence of Gibson’s music is definitely to use world music as a means of expressing the American art of jazz and his original creations. Gibson’s multi-talented skills make his new CD release a fresh and colourful jazz experience.
