Coleman Hawkins/Johnny Hodges in Paris by Hawkins & Rhythm/ Hodges & Orch
These side were originally recorded in Paris in 1949 (Hawks) and 1950 (Rabbits). The five Hawkins sides use French sidemen (except K. Clarke) and are ALL RIGHT. But the Hodges sides are worth the paltry admission. This CD is part of the French BMG series of American jazzmen recorded in Europe. They're packed - 22 sides on this one - with fine stuff at a great price. I got mine for under $10 at a discounter. Hodges and his then band featuring Shorty Baker, Quentin Jackson, Jimmy Hamilton and rhythm have obligatory Ellington fare as well as a bunch of Hodges originals which are really fine. I'm not sure he ever recorded them again. (none are on the Mosaic '50s compilation of Hodges small groups). For me, no one can touch Hodges on alto and these sides find him at his very best in a very swinging group. Five stars.
