Desire by David Azarian

Haven’t heard of David Azarian? Well take note of the name now, becuase he's been making absolutely fantastic jazz for years, and his new release, "Desire", displays his wonderful ability to further push the envelope of what jazz can be. After each listen to the Trio's performance on this live album (with John Lockwood on Bass and Marty Ballou & Jamie Haddad on Drums), I’m blown away by something I hadn’t picked up on before. The recording includes a good amount of improvisation and is a perfect example of the magic that can result from it. David's compositions and arrangements are filled with wonderful surprises and are extremely well executed. His strong classical training and Armenian background give him a completely unique, non-immitative sound. This is hardest to achieve in Jazz, and David does it while pushing the theoritical expectations of what Jazz can be. David Azarian is a master pianist/composer with a lot to offer to the Jazz community. Check him out!
