Impressions: The Verve Jazz Sides by Wes Montgomery

Impressions: The Verve Jazz sides is a comparable 2 CD set covering Wes during his jazz years. The first CD captures Wes fronting big bands, and playing in combos with Jimmy Smith. Some of the songs are classics like Caravan and Milestones. The Second CD shows features Wes with the Wynton Kelly Trio which featured Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. The songs were issued on the albums, Smokin' at the Half Note and Willow Weep For Me. Wes follows the changes precisely with his melting pot of soul jazz, bop, cool and blues. His amazing octaves shine true on this great collection. In the track Surrey With The Fringe On Top, Wes and the Wynton Kelly Trio, venture far out of the simplicity of the song into the stratospheric bop and swing that characterizes Wes' phenomenal command of his instrument. The 2 CD set epitomizes Wes in so many ways, and shows that in many ways simplicity can ride the waves of jazz. Wes' style has been imitated in so many forms and fashions, but nobody will ever show the mastery and the subtle soul of Wes Mo
