In the Wee, Small Hours by Ruby Braff and Strings

Like Gabriel over clouds,Braff and his cornet soar over two string sections- two decades apart. The earlier tracks on this Arbors release , songs associated with Bing Crosby , wererecorded in 1978 for London's Pizza Express jazz club . That album that received limited distribution. The new sides, featuring Sinatra tunes , were put together during 1999 in New York. I prefer the more dramatic British strings with their eloquent intros, interludes and endings . However the American cuts benefit from the strong rhythm section of John Bunch,Bucky Pizzarelli,Michael Moore and Kenny Washington. Braff's sound -Hackett with an edge- with its leaps , runs and growls is instantly recognizable. Here as always he is melodic prefering to embellish rather than take side trips .

A beautiful album -and it includes a version of White Christmas that you will want to play all year long..
