Jazz Masters 54-Woody Herman by Woody Herman & Big Band
If you are into Big Band Jazz (and if you're not-why not?) then you should go out right now and buy this CD. Woody Herman had many fine bands, but the period represented on this recording (1963-1965) seems to me to be his very best! The particular combination of personal, charts, energy, cohesiveness &SWINGABILITY can't be beat. Just one listen to the bands reading of Neal Hefti's great chart The Good Earth should convince you that this was indeed a prime period for Woody and his band. My only complaint-this is a mere sampling of Woody's recorded efforts on the old Philips label. My plea to the folks at Verve in charge of re-issues- do all of us a favor and release more.
