Little Birds Have Fast Hearts No.1 by Die Like A Dog Quartet

Muscians: Peter Brotzmann/Kondo Toshinori/William Parker/Hamid DrakeThis is a truly excellent album... Fromthe liner notes, it looks like the quartetis inspired by the jazz music of AlbertAyler, and it does show in the gorgeousmelodies that Brotzmann and Kondo playon their instruments. But they don't limitthemselves to Aylerian themes -- especiallyinteresting are the electronic manipulationsthat Kondo performs on his trumpet. Heplays with great imagination as do HamidDrake and Peter Brotzmann. And though I'venever really been a fan of William Parker(I've never been as charmed by his playingas a lot of other people seem to be), heplays well enough here.In the tradition of hard bop (but NOTplaying hard bop!), each player getssignificant solo space, though the"songs" don't follow any head-solo-outstructure, but that's not to say there isn'tany underlying structure. Sometimes Kondoand Brotz play in unison which sounds greatafter they've been having a tumbling andchasing conversation. Hamid Drake isexcellent -- I don't think I've yet heardhim play poorly on record. This may be a bit too "out" for someears, but I think the format and inspirationfor this quartet brings out a moreconservative side of Brotzmann. Ilike it.
