Tommy Emmanuel hails from Australia and started playing guitar at the early age of four, going on to officially begin his professional career at the ripe old age of six! He became a session player in Sydney as a teenager and played on numerous commercials and backed up bands such as Air Supply and Roberta Flack. He also played with giants Eric Clapton, Joe Walsh, Stevie Wonder, Les Paul and his own personal musical hero and inspiration, Chet Atkins, who gave him the title c.g.p. (certified guitar player.) He has earned four Platinum and Gold albums in his homeland.
As a finger style guitar player he can simultaneously play multiple parts and he uses his extraordinary skill to blend folk, country, jazz, blues and other styles into his compositions.
This DVD, Live at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Ballarat, Australia, recorded while he was on tour in 2005 is a superb example of his great talent and mastery of his craft.
He says, "I think it showcases my entire musical life: you really get to see my different influences coming together quite nicely," and he’s right. From bluegrass to country to rock and roll and blues, he makes each transition with ease and style.
The DVD is masterfully produced and edited and features short interview segments inbetween songs that tell a bit about his personal history and give viewers additional background information about the songs he composed and performed throughout the show. Additional extras include close up shots of his hands for guitar students to study.
Highlights include the blazing bluegrass number, "Tall Fiddler," "Cannonball Rag," and "Walls," a duet he performs with his partner, "Lizzy" Watkins, whose sweet voice is smooth and glossy and nicely compliments his own voice and playing. He also does an interesting "Heartbreak Hotel/Roxanne" medley that beautifully illustrates his versatility.
This DVD is highly recommended for anyone interested in guitar and its multi-genre appeal is sure to entertain and delight all music fans alike. There is certainly something for everyone who appreciates good music to enjoy here.
