Patricia Barber is vocalist, pianist and composer, but it is her lyric genius that really stands out. Once upon a time, jazz musicians and poets got together and achieved a gimmicky coalition. Barber successfully merges poetic imagery with the improvisation, harmony and rhythm of jazz. Her sidemen respond to her smokey, nightowl voice and deliver dark alley moods and after-hours ambience. The addition of a trumpet to the guitar, bass, piano and drums unit adds flashes of light to the inky depths of Patrica Barber's provocative tone poems. Ms. Barber is clearly a creature of the night and she knows her fellow denizens very well. This is a very thought-provoking album.
