This is a smashing CD by the latest edition of the Four Freshmen, one of the most enduring and beloved jazz vocal and instrumental groups in the last half of this century. For me there has never been a Freshmen sound like that of the early groups (Groups 1-4, especially #3), but these latest Freshmen are definitely in their league. The present members (Greg Stegman, Kevin Stout, Bob Ferreira and Brian Eichenberger) may be the best Freshmen foursome since the late sixties. This CD is not just a nostalgic journey down memory lane either but a collection of fresh, inovative arrangments (most by the talented lead singer, Greg Stegeman) which are sung and played to perfection. The group's tight vocal harmonies, their instrumental artistry (e.g., Kevin's vituosity on trombone and guitar and Brian's exquisite piano solo on "Moonlight in Vermont"), Bob's full-flavored voice on "More Love," and the group's beautiful and touching "Where Do You Start" are just a few of the reasons I recommend this CD to Freshfans and jazz lovers everywhere. It may well mark the beginning of a renaisance of interest in the Four Freshmen and their unforgetable sound. I hope so!
