Flipside by Jeff Lorber

As long as Jeff Lorber has been in the music business, one would think he would play it safe and always put out the slamming jazz/funk he is well known for. But on his new CD, "Flipside", Lorber reigns the funk in for a more varied sonic approach that definitely works. Working alongside veteran smooth jazz producer Steve Dubin, Jeff has crafted warm, organic grooves within the concept of "flipsides" of 45 record singles, which often times were better than the original A-side releases. Helping Jeff out are Gary Meek, Paul Jackson, Jr, and newcomer Nelson Jackson on additional keyboards. The CD is a mix of uptempo soulful grooves and slower, more intimate melodies that still retain their funk undercurrents. As always, Jeff's keyboard work is always funky, never boring. If you have been a long time fan of Jeff Lorber, "Flipside" will make you take another look at his skills. If you're not a fan, this is a great CD to get acquainted with this contemporary jazz heavyweight.
