Will Call by Will Donato

Will Call, the sensational follow up to saxophonist Will Donato's Will Power, starts big and grows from there. Donato is no stranger to the music scene and has worked with many talented artists in the industry over the years such as Gregg Karukas, Tony Guerrero, Steve Reid, Al Mckay, Blake Aaron, Steve Oliver, Rogerio Jardim (the latter three all appear on this CD) and many others. Donato has also contributed his talents to movie soundtracks. Thelma and Louise, The Untouchables and The Wedding Planner all feature his work.

This latest CD from saxophonist Donato's has it all. The music on Will Call is inspired, fun, saucy and sexy. Donato makes switching between R&B, funk, high energy Latin or smooth ballads seem effortless. And indeed it is as this CD covers all these musical genres, so whether it's an upbeat, funky rhythm or a brilliantly composed ballad, you'll find nothing choppy or out of place on Will Call.

Will Call starts off with the Latin infused "Tropica," featuring Donato on soprano sax and showcases some fine keyboarding and drums from Jardim. The title track "Will Call," with Donato on soprano sax, once again is sexy, but with the perfect touch of sassiness from Aaron's fine guitar work. Salo Loyo on keyboards provides great vibes on this as well. Then there's some terrific R&B with "More Sway," which features awesome tenor sax work from Donato, cool drumming and vocals from Jardim ties it all together.

"Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get," the fantastic Dramatics tune, is performed wonderfully by Donato on fluid tenor sax. This is a wonderful cover, featuring Steve Maddio on trumpet. "Highway 111" takes a turn to a mellower vibe, once again featuring Aaron on guitar. Tom Zink on keyboards and some fun congas from Jim Fitzgerald create a nice ride. Donato's tenor sax on "Wanting" is super sexy. Listen for the flute, which Donato also plays on this one. Nice. This is a great tune with a great energy to it. Slowing it down is the enchanting "Speak My Heart." Pull that someone up close and dance to this one. Zink has a fine keyboard solo, a bit reminiscent of Bruce Hornsby. Also featured is nice playing from Mick Linden on the fretless bass.

Another great cover, "I'll Be Around" is performed beautifully by Donato on alto sax and once again featuring great vocals and drums from Jardim. "Morning.Noon.Night." written by Jardim, is very funky, very energetic and just plain fun. The synth provided by Loyo ties it all together and keeps the mood going all the way through. Rounding out Will Call, is Chick Corea's "Crystal Silence," which Donato puts his signature touches to. His smooth tenor sax is moody and nothing short of sensational.

Will Call is a must have for any smooth jazz lover. Whether it' smooth jazz, R&B, funk or a tender, soothing to the senses ballad, you'll find it all right here. Will Call covers a great mix of genres and ties them all together, creating a perfectly blended and skillfully executed CD that is sure to be played over and over.
