A Second Look by Vic Juris

Guitarist Vic Juris is a musician's musician. With this effort the artist garners assistance from his sometime employer, sax great Dave Liebman to complement a crackerjack rhythm section. Juris performs on both acoustic and electric guitars here. As he possesses a total command of the swing vernacular to round a vocal type mode of attack, augmented by buzzing single note lines and articulately developed phrasings. The band covers samba grooves and fragile motifs along with speedy bop-like vamps. And on "All The Things You Are," Liebman’s whispery soprano sax choruses ride atop Juris’ delicate fabrications.

Amid diminutive chord progressions and rapid flurries Juris and his associates mix it up quite nicely throughout this multifaceted production, additionally enhanced by an endearing track mix. They can whip matters into submission, render sanguine balladry or conjure up Brazilian-jazz stylizations with sophistication and panache. (Recommended.... )
