Gene Harris was a bop pianist firmly rooted in gospel and the blues who incorporated a lot of soul into his playing. While he could play most any style of jazz, his uncanny ability to play jazz that was fun and easy to digest earned him considerable success with his group Three Sounds in the 50's and 60's and as a solo artist in later years. Alley Cats is the last recording released by Harris before he died in January at age 66. On this live recording, Harris is joined by several special guests including Jack McDuff and Ernie Watts, but Harris' catchy playing is what shines on every track. A fitting way to remember a jazz great.
