Mr. Coppola is a highly respected artist in his field and through this project it does not take professor of higher learning to come to that conclusion. The music is fresh and alive with inventiveness and extemporization churning around every spin. Whether you embrace yourself with the sounds of Coppola's 9-string "Hydra" or the tones of the nylon stings, there are lessons to be learned involving straight jazz guitar for musicians at any level.
This superb project also features Jim Andrews on upright bass, Tim Moran setting it up with alto sax, and Arti Dixson on drums, together with Mr. Coppola and his guitar it makes for a very enjoyable listen. All of which have numerous kudos attached to their own personal resumes in jazz society, a very cool and innovative amalgamation of gifts.
"L.E. Blues" the third cut is an extraordinary piece with a vibrant and sizzling introduction by Moran and Coppola in unison allows the harmony to set free the passion within the listener.
A wonderful rendition of pianist Guaraldi's "Christmas Time is Here" brings closure to this project but leaves you with that "play it again" temptation in your mind. The nylon string "Hydra" effect just brings magic to this piece. Catch the hint of Andrew’s splendid bass action bringing solitude to this effort. A classic cut.
For the jazz guru, Coppola's technique and knowledge are superior, for the avid listener, it is an experience that needs to ensue. It is jazz with many roads which to follow. Take the trip.
