Seattle-based pianist Dave Peck works in the traditional jazz piano trio format on his wonderful live Out of Seattle, recorded at the famed Jazz Alley. Traditional by no means signifies routine or predictable. With Joe LaBarbera’s drums and Jeff Johnson on the bass, this is hardly a run of the mill trio. Maybe LaBarbera’s presence on the set triggers the thought, but Bill Evans comparisons seem unavoidable at times. On the extended and nearly unrecognizable "Come Rain or Come Shine," Peck glides over the keys like an ice skater, and on the closing "With A Song In My Heart," the mood is so introspective as to give this listener a sense of overhearing a hushed and private conversation. It is only the applause of those in attendance that brings the room back into focus. The slow, methodical playing on the Miles Davis standard "Solar" is moving, and Peck’s deft touch on Leonard Bernstein’s "Lonely Town" is enhanced by the wonderful accompaniment brought to the date by the bassist and drummer. Rounding the recording out with "Come Rain or Come Shine," "You and the Night and the Music," as close as the trio gets to uptempo, "I Loves You Porgy," and the wonderfully played closer, "With A Song In My Heart." Inspired playing by all.
