Peter Compo in Europe by Peter Compo

Jazz violinist, Peter Compo, appears with his own quartet and two European pickup groups on this new CD. The regular group includes Mike Diez-guitar, Ditmar Fahr-bass and Oliver Mewes-drums. In total, 16 tunes are presented including a couple of originals by the leader. The balance are mostly jazz standards such as C-Jam Blues, Girl Talk, I Got Rhythm, Just Friends, In a Sentimental Mood and Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most.

A surprise was a great rendition of Satan Takes a Holiday and Smoke Rings. Both were big band hits in the late 30s and are seldom heard today. Compo's music is mellow and swinging and at times shows more Stuff Smith influence rather than Venuti or Grappelli. Fans of jazz violin will enjoy this session.
