Profile by Masha Bijlsma Band

Having played piano and bass guitar in her youth, Masha began singing at the age of 19 and by 1990 she had developed the Masha Bijlsma Band and toured as the opening act for Billy Cobham. Based in Holland, the band has toured Indonesia, Denmark, Greece and Sweden.

The vocalist performs most of her vocals in English but handles a couple of items on this CD in flawless French. Her sensuous voice is enhanced by some very fine piano and rhythm accompaniment. Pianist, Rob Van Den Broeck is outstanding on this session.

Songs for "Profile" were carefully chosen from material by Charlie Haden, Thelonious Monk, Jacques Brel, Kate Bush, Fats Waller, Eddie de Lange and Masha throws in some nice originals of her own. Her rendition of Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz" is one of the best I've heard in years.

Saxophonist, Tony Lakatos, is a guest musician on the session and is a standout on Charlie Haden's "Song for Abbey". This is nice quiet jazz and should be a favorite for evening airplay.
