Signature Songs by Various Artists

What’s that you say, another boring compilation for the jazz novice introducing them to the works of some of jazz’s greatest artists? And then, Liza Minnelli’s "New York, New York" on the last track of the CD? Even though Minnelli’s quivering vibrato grates on my last nerve, since 9/11 I tip my hat to any vocal tribute to the great city.

Interestingly, what you have on the other 8 tracks are jazz signature songs taken from the various artists’ albums. But, Telarc has a good ear for finding those signature versions that are quite different from the ones that you are normally used to hearing on compilations from "The Best of.... " albums. So in this respect, you may be delighted with the results.

Included on this CD in order are:

George Shearing’s "Lullaby of Birdland" recorded in Studio A, Power Station - New York City February 1994.

An unreleased "Minnie the Moocher" Live by Cab Calloway and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra - Cincinnati February 1993.

An up-tempo "Take Five" from Dave Brubeck with a phenomenal drum solo by Randy Jones, recorded Live at the Washington National Cathedral - Washington DC June 1995.

Dizzy Gillespie’s "Con Alma" from Bird Songs-The Final Recordings, Live at the Blue Note - New York City January 1992.

Ahmad Jamal and an unreleased "Poinciana" recorded in Joe Segal’s Jazz Showcase at the Blackstone Hotel - Chicago November 1992.

Clark Terry’s "Mumbles" in a Tribute to Oscar Peterson - Town Hall New York City 1996.

Erroll Garner’s "Misty" recorded Live at the Seattle World’s Fair August 1963Lionel Hampton "Flyin’ Home" recorded Live at the Blue Note - New York City June 1991.

Liza Minnelli "New York, New York" recorded live Carnegie Hall - New York City 1987.

Nice compilation of unusual takes, but next time leave off Minnelli. (Groan)
