The Stryker / Slagle Band by The Stryker / Slagle Band
In simple terms, this album smokes! And hearing the somewhat under recognized guitarist Dave Stryker, is akin to previewing an aural illustration of the history of jazz guitar. After touring for quite awhile, the quartet co-led by top-flight saxophonist Steve Slagle decided it was time for a recording. Here, the band perpetuates fluid lines atop briskly woven rhythms and more. They cover a hodgepodge of swing and bop related pulses amid a few thorny time signatures interspersed throughout various movements. As Stryker’s articulate and multidimensional methodologies include bluesy dreamscapes and blistering single note runs. Ultimately, he displays a penchant for adding nuance and depth to just about any lick or motif he’s running with. It’s easily discernible that Slagle and Stryker have achieved a spirited comfort zone here. On this release, the quartet meshes a hip demeanor with gleaming adventurism consisting of a few bump/grind type episodes and soaring, bop based grooves. This outing should not be overlooked.
