Trio In Tokyo by Michel Petrucciant Steve Gadd and Anthony Jackson

French pianist Michel Petrucciani's star never burned as bright in the US as it did abroad after he made his initial splash in the mid-80's. Maybe his style was just too polite and romantic, or maybe he was just a victim of different marketing priorities by the major labels. No matter when Petrucciani died last year at age 36, he left behind a body of work that would make a jazz pianist proud. Recorded in 1997, Trio in Tokyo is a strong recording that pits Petrucciani with two long time collaborators for a evening of bebop in the land of the rising sun. Petrucciani's playing on this release is very emotional, and his solos are so logical and lyrical and every music student should study them. Solid supporting performances by Gadd and Jackson round out a perfect album.
