Whenever by Don Burrows Quintet

Auditioning this CD was a true pleasure. Although Don Burrows has been playing on the Australian jazz scene for decades, this was my first opportunity to experience his creative interpretation of jazz standards.

The jazz quintet plus french horn and strings blend sensuously and the music flows like melting snow; thanks to the orchestrations of Julian Lee. The group recorded 14 of the sixteen tracks on the first take......amazing. Don adds a bit of delightful overdubbing on oboe and orchestral clarinet.

The tunes were chosen with great taste and include the compositions of Duke Ellington, Johnny Mandel, George Gershwin, Noel Coward and three Don Burrows originals. George Golla's great guitar work enhances such standards as Django Reinhardt's "Nuages" and Gershwin's "How Long Has This Been Going On?".

Don Burrows is a "world class" musician and improvisor. He appears to have no "comfort level" and plays equally well in low or high registers. His alto solo on his own composition "When Pietje Smiles" is pure artistry. Listen to his swinging clarinet on "Room With a View" - stunning.

I have absolutely no reservations in recommending this fabulous CD to any jazz enthusiast.
