This group of Bay area musicians delivers a blend of music that defies traditional description. If category is your thing, sorry. You'll have to settle for variety, when it comes to Vinyl's music. Not just funky, but "old school" funky, latin percussion, reggae, and even some rap vocals come included in this explosive 2 CD package, which covers two evenings of Vinyl, getting down in whatever manner they see fit.
My best advice to you, if you have an opportunity to see these cats play live: Get there early. Have a couple shots of tequila, and get ready to have a good time. Performers and entertainers frequently face the necessity to reinvent themselves. This band comes pre-reinvented, so forget about what you might expect. Whether you get to see them perform live or just listen to the CD, get ready to surrender.
Remember Tower of Power? Earth, Wind, & Fire's Live album, Gratitude? Mother's Finest? Mandrill? Graham Central Station? Sly and the Family Stone? It seems that Vinyl sure does, because they've taken several pages out of history and created a sound and, perhaps, even a movement of their very own. People are still trying to figure out what the aforementioned bands were doing and how to classify them. We should enjoy for years to come the challenge of discovering what to do with Vinyl. My suggestion: Just let the band play. And, while you're doing that, figure this one out: Whedawedat.
Can't wait to share this one with my friends and listening audience.
Recommended: For people who love good music, period.
