Boghes and Voices by Enzo Favata - Simone Zanchini - Cuncordu Di Castelsardo
The modern jazz master from Sardinia, saxophonist Enzo Favata attempts to unveil the sacred mystery of his homeland on this set featuring vocals and Simone Zanchini’s textural accordion work. Favata’s hybrid melding of jazz and Mediterranean themes provide the highlights for the preponderance of his rather impressive discography. However, this outing offers yet another perspective into this man’s often cunning intentions. The bulk of this production offers a somewhat solemn or perhaps mystical framework, guided by Favata’s weaving, alto sax, and bass clarinet lines. As the six-man, vocal troupe equalizes these pieces via inquisitive type chants, brimming with yearning choruses and sublime dialogues. Favata and Zanchini frequently engage in dreamy soundscapes amid a few pumping ostinato motifs and melodically tinged exchanges. There are a few superfluous developments here and there, but for the most part this recording conveys the saxophonist’s deep-rooted infatuation with his country.
