Zaguan by Miguel Provedo

Flamenco and Jazz share many similarities. They are both musics created by the persecuted and disenfranchised members of the larger societies - Africans in the America's and Gypsies in Spain. They both also are improvisational musics with a language that defies western notational methods. And they both are pure blues music where you can hear the joy in the pain and the pain in the Joy.

Miguel Provedo, one of the rising stars of Flamenco is remarkable for being so accomplished at his age (26) and for having received some of the highest honors and accolades in the Flamenco World. His voice is a miracle of clarity and flexibility, the young voice of a very old soul. Although his voice has not been burnished with smoke, late nights and lost loves it has been recognized as carrying the pure soul of the flamenco Heart.

Zaguan is his third release and he shares equal honors with the masterful Guitarist Cuchielo who perfectly complements Provedo. On Clemecia and Sal al Guisao - which are both rubato conversations- their musical conversation is exquisite and Cuchielo's solo intros are breathtaking. The only other instruments are Palmas (the characteristic Flamenco Handclaps) and Cahon (what is basically a resonant box played with the hands). The CD features many different types of Flamenco including Tangos, Bulerias, Fandangos and flows smoothly taking you on a journey through the heart of Spain. Que Borrachera is one of the most traditional numbers, a Buleria de Jerez , one that preserves Flamenco in its purest state. It sounds like a the singer is surrounded by a group of friends clapping and calling out in the midst of a joyous celebration. The final piece El Uvero is solo voice sung over a drone creating a meditative mystical moment. This is pure artistry sitting firm on the Flamenco tradition while expressing the fresh vision of Miguel Provedo.
