Review: Texas native Paul Carr is noted for his husky tenor sax sound and involvement in higher education, to include his formation of the non-profit “The Jazz Academy of Music.” With this release, he garners the assistance of an all-star cast, for an inspired tribute to late great tenor sax icon Joe Henderson. Simply stated, all the pieces fit rather snugly here, to coincide with the obvious camaraderie these artists pronounce during the entire session.
Sparks are flying as Carr steers the ensemble through gutsy, passionate and flawlessly rendered takes on a portion of Henderson’s songbook, along with two originals and standards. Nonetheless, it’s a sprightly endeavor, featuring the leader’s full-bodied tone and fluid delivery. He executes these works with authority and delves quite deep into Henderson’s artistry in choice spots, while communicating his personal touch throughout.
Melodic, swinging, and at times hard-hitting, the soloists frequently embark upon torrid soloing sojourns. On Henderson’s hauntingly beautiful modern jazz classic “Black Narcisus,” the saxophonist vividly conjures up remembrances of the original recording via his mellifluous and tuneful choruses.
Pianist Mulgrew Miller, and trumpeter Terell Stafford offer thrills a minute. And in some instances, the band moves forward with powerful eloquence. Therefore, Carr’s newly issued project offers the best of many jazz worlds and looms as an unanticipated top-pick for 2008. Music magic at work, indeed…
