Review: Long, stretching notes on horn take Dolphin Dance to a new level of exploration—somber & thoughtful. Briseno uses a Harmon mute on Herbie Hancock’s classic, providing an extra layer of sound.
Coming back with "Invitation" gives a perky lift to this CD. Clark travels lithely across the keyboard, with a gentle bass backing by Zisman. Aiming for a fat sound was Briseno’s idea on Invitation--and, he succeeded nicely. Drummer, Tana, does a brief but brisk solo, keeping this tune up-tempo.
Clark’s artistry shows again on "A Child Is Born," as he offers a soft accompaniment to Briseno’s muted horn. "Rocinanate" and "Dulcinea" show Briseno’s talent for layering tones. He shows the same devotion to creating music, as he shows for performing music. Done in 6/8, "Dulcinea" proves peppy and pure. The quartet show their ability to integrate melodies in the swaggering Bob Haggart tune, "What’s New?" "Half Nelson" brings back the perky tempo and showcases all players.
This album is more than piano bar music. It swings. It goes introspective. It allows for reminiscing. The Modesto Briseno Quartet flows smoothly, reaching new levels of sound--a nice presentation. Truly the fruit of legendary perfection, as the name implies.
