Review: It's always a special occasion when Odetta releases a new album. Gonna Let It Shine is Odetta's third CD for M.C. Records and it's a most welcome Christmas flavored gem.

Born on New Years Eve in 1930, Odetta, at age 74 is still packing in the crowds. With a voice ranging from coloratura soprano to baritone, the singer is a musical wonder! She has been singing publicly for sixty years and heralded the call of her God, civil freedoms, prisoner's rights and women's rights. Odetta is a crusader and a legend in America.

The amiable entertainer recorded this concert for WFUV-FM 90.7, the public radio outlet of Fordham University. WFUV is commended for their efforts in providing the public with a wide variety of quality music in all genres. This writer often listens to their streaming audio of archived material. Odetta is joined by pianist Seth Farber and the Holmes Brothers. Farber appears on all tracks while the Holmes Brothers trio backs Odetta on "Down By The Riverside," "This Little Light Of Mine" and the bonus version of the latter. Odetta's magnetic charm shows up, not only in her vocals, but in her chatty narratives.

There are no disappointments on this album. The veteran gospel and folk legend delivers her music in high style. We had a couple of favorites as always. "Rise Up Shepherd" and "Freedom Trilogy" exhibit Odetta's spirit and remarkable range. "Down By The Riverside" and "Midnight Special" are traditional favorites.

Five shining stars to Odetta, Seth Farber and the Holmes Brothers! It's a delightful Christmas release.
