Review: One may not consider the vibraphone a romantic jazz tool but it truly can be and is in the hands of the likes of Lionel Hampton, Cal Tjader and currently Bob Masteller. Evidence of that is in Masteller’s new release The Jazz Corner Swings Latin in 2005. This spin gets across clearly that the Latin flavor thriving with the vibes in full motion. The vibes in this act is the lead role but the supporting cast adds so much more to the ambiance of the spin, a total jazz package!
The keyboard and vibe collaboration on Ellington and Mercer’s “Candy” is an exceptional piece. Masteller and pianist Norm Gagne feed off each other’s senses as the travel through the arrangement.
Mark Husband’s congas take center stage in “Dream,” as the romance of the vibe is showcased somewhat. Husband also puts that Latin signature on this cut more so than others. The beat is up and smooth!
On a side note the club noise is an added plus from the Masteller’s club, The Jazz Corner.
Having critically scribed other Masteller projects I seem to never be disappointed as you will not be either. His professional sound and dedication comes through his craft as he achieves what he sets out to do each recording.
In this I see his emotional tie to his father’s talented vibes as the performance on this clearly states. One just has to spin to understand, so please do so!
