CD Title: Multiplicity

Year: 2005

Record Label: Stretch Records

Style: Soul / Funk Jazz

Review:

This CD is off the hook!  The ease with which it cascades from one style to the next, and the apparent close comradery of the brilliantly organized ensemble of musicians give this recording its much-deserved title.  Dave Weckl started playing drums at age 8 and began receiving awards during his high school years. At age 16 he began to work professionally with local pop and jazz groups and has worked on various radio and TV jingles, sound track sessions, and top recording dates with artists like George Benson, Peabo Bryson, Diana Ross and Robert Plant, to name a few.

He played for 7 years with Chick Corea’s  “Elektric” and “Akoustic” bands.  The Elektric Band featured Dave's drumming and creative stylings, which combined electric and acoustic drums.  This earned him world-wide recognition. The Elektric Band, went on a 10-year hiatus, but came back and recorded a new CD, To the Stars, and toured into 2005.

As a solo artist, Dave has recorded and produced 10 of his own projects, all on Stretch/Concord Records.

Multiplicity is genuinely a fantastic group collaboration, crediting all of the musicians with various writing, performing and arranging contributions.  The mood changes seamlessly and oftentimes dramatically throughout from soul to funk to world, giving this disc a far-reaching appeal, which is compounded by Weckl’s technical genius.  The sound is smooth, sharp and biting from the driving, staccato blend of textures in “Watch Your Step” where Meek blows ferociously, and Weingart jabs intensely, to the more laid back, but deeply soulful  “Elements of Surprise.”

The addition of Garcia’s percussive brilliance in Weingart’s “Vuelo” is a complete thrill.  Kennedy and Fierabracci are also equally exuberant on bass, Kennedy deeply bubbling on “Inner Vision” and Fierabracci bouncy and vivacious on “What It Is” and Pesco’s guitar is strong and dynamic whether he’s playfully plucking or all out funking, as in the blasting groove tune “Chain Reaction.”  Needless to say, Weckl is electrifying throughout. Each of these musicians is powerful in their own right, and so, come together to create an explosive impact of diversity as far as musical style and force go.  With so much to offer the listener, Multiplicity is a sure winner.

Tracks: Watch Your Step, Elements of Surprise, Vuelo, Inner Vision, What It Is, Chain Reaction, Cascade, Mixed Bag, Down On The Corner
