Review: Mark Kleinhaut is one of the finest jazz guitarists curently performing. He composes with much flair and intimacy. Backed by Jim Lyden on bass and Les Harris, Jr. on drums, Kleinhaut and his fellow musicians shine with clarity and brilliance with the songs on this CD.
There are thirteen songs, and each contains a fine gem of jazz musings sure to attract a large jazz following. The songs include "Intro to Sister Cuba," "Sister Cuba," "Baby R," "Holding the Center," "Holiday," "Forgotten Song," "Erika's 8:30 Rule," "Logical Extension," "Shells on Ancon Beach," "Green T," "Passing Bird," "Gospel of B," and "Rock & Sand."
The listening audience will fine many interesting, unusual, and highly motivated performances in this collection. Each musician is at his finest, and it is pure enjoyment listening to them work together and in solo.
This CD swings with joy. There is much to recommend it. The songs are first rate and so are the performances. "Holding the Center" is a mover, and it catches the listener up in its intricate phrasing. "Shells on Ancon Beach" and "Gospel of B" are two more examples of how finely atuned this trio is! "Rock & Sand" and "Sister Cuba" soar with unusual jazz motifs.
Kleinhaut is at his best with his memorable phrasing, evident in each and every song. The songs are imaginative.
Highly recommended. Entertaining jazz!
