Review:
A lot of funky grooves to chew on this disc. “Between the Two” and “Blooze!” are Susman originals. Sandwiched in between is a great version of Miles Davis’ “All Blues” arranged by horn player, Jeff Scott. “Fly Me To The Moon,” another swinging cover with impeccable arrangements by tuba-player, Caswell, is smooth and charming. “Uptown Suite” is infused with elegance, spicy world flavor, hot sibilant percussion, and traditional style all rolled into one juicy escapade. A nice, neat version of “Oye Como Va” arranged by Caswell is followed by a live version of super funky Isaac Hayes’ “Shaft.” Can you dig it? “It Might As Well Be Spring” changes the mood a bit as it glides and flows along leading to a song you don’t often hear covered by a jazz ensemble, “Spinning Wheel.” But, this one starts off with a punch, changes up with some strong solos and carries through with solid, rolling verve. Sweet! Closing off this collection is a splendid, raucous “Pass the Peas.” Love this one!
A talented group of musicians, here, who gel and seem to thoroughly enjoy the craft. Enjoyable and fun from beginning to end.
