Review:

Angelic fingertips follow the ivory laden road as Lisa Hilton rejuvenates the classic fantasy “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” In her exquisite, but sinfully, sultry mix of originals and standards, her new release Midnight In Manhattan draws her closer to a status in jazz few share! Released in August this year, the effort is untarnished and sophisticated Hilton. Ms. Hilton again takes the innovative path to arranging and melodies, once more confirming her defining element…consistency in radiance. Midnight in Manhattan is Ms. Hilton’s jewel box of brilliance!

Amidst the predicted accolades associated with this spin, comes a number of distinctive players. Engineer Al Schmitt again molds the thoughts and creativity of Hilton to perfection. Saxman Bobby Militello of Brubeck fame shows class brass from the opening cut. Also, catch a listen to John Friday on drums as he centers the whole production. Bassist Reggie McBride adds a certain splendor to each piece he feels.

As for the content, there is nothing but encores…

Hilton’s solo performance of “Late Night” has a certain naughty appeal as if the notes were slowly undressing the evening. Heavy keystrokes lead to light ivory massages, which come across fluidly throughout the arrangement. Dripping of that classic evening of love…a superb job wrapped in romance.

Exit cut “Kinda of in Love” has that timid, romantic appeal. The melody has a slight happy-happy feel, but is mixed with a gentle, affectionate tone. Spin it and you will find yourself falling in that very private mood.

Militello’s sax ignites the skyline over the arrangement of title piece “Midnight in Manhattan” as it draws you out into the cities chilled, exotic night. As soon as Ms. Hilton lights up the piece with her passion, the entire piece falls madly in place, exhibiting a fine piece of jazz after dark.

Made In Manhattan … Spin it… Feel it… Embrace it…its all jazz!
