Review: Breathing new air into classic old standards, vocalist Mark Robinson takes on the world of the Great American Songbook, mirroring the depth of Perry Como, the suave of Tony Bennett and the ritz of Frank Sinatra with his debut album, Some Small Dive.
Robinson’s mild mannered, yet persuasive delivery makes the listener feel like he’s sitting at a table being personally addressed with each note.
Opening the CD with "East of the Sun," made famous by the one-of-a-kind Tony Bennett, Robinson's mellow, rich voice carries the notes smoothly with emphasis in just the right places. His rendition of the classic, "Days of Wine and Roses" is perky, yet reminiscent of those days spent together with a special love.
With a good projection, Robinson's voice carries even the difficult notes in a natural tone, without hesitation. "I've Got The World On A String" is just as classy as it was intended, with a nice keyboard backing. Reviving up the tempo, "Close Your Eyes" features spirited bass back in a swinging fashion.
Gentle keyboard of David Austin leads the seductive version of "A Ghost of a Chance". Smooth and slow, Robinson makes every note steamy. Uptempo and liquid, "I Remember You" is heartfelt--a love song for all times. Cascading piano notes bridge this vocal masterpiece of Victor Schertzenger and Johnny Mercer.
Piano bar-ish, "Lush Life" opens in a lyracle embrace before Robinson launches into a sensual version, accompanied by sexy, lively sax by Noel Jewkes. Robinson dives right into the Gershwin's famous "Embraceable You."
Bluesy, slow piano roll opening, "I Keep Going Back to Joe's" carries the feeling of a guy waiting for that special someone. Gentle drums of Bob Blankenship, soft but busy piano, and smooth drums accompany Robinson as he delivers. Mark Williams gets a hot solo on bass during "I'm Through With Love."
Lacking fear, Robinson steps up to "Waters of March" without flinching as he croons every note flawlessly. Closing with "Centerpiece," features Williams' strong ability on bass, adding depth to this piece before being joined by Robinson's velvet voice and high spirited keyboards of David Austin.
A remarkable debut that is sure to arouse the senses.
