Featured Artist: Patrick Yandall

CD Title: Laws of Groovity

Year: 2008

Record Label: Zangi Records

Style: Smooth Jazz

Review:

Laws of Groovity has all of the punch usually associated with a Patrick Yandall album.  The seasoned axeman provides some really spirited jams on this latest pearl, his 9th in all.

An artist who clearly knows his way around a guitar and a vibe, it becomes all too clear from the first tune, an outburst of funk and energy in the form of a cover of “Always There,” which then spills over into every cut thereafter. There’s the moderate and funky title track with its catchy melody, the slow, syrupy, R&B-flavored “It’s Our Time,” (this one is just plain customized for the love addicts), the happy and Latiny “Viejo Amigo,” his cover of the always appetizing “Yearning For Your Love” and the funky-tight “Let’s Flow,” just to name but a meager handful.

Indulge me for a moment. The feel of this album is what’s needed in most folks’ lives today: To get lost in a sea of smoothness, to sit back and let someone pamper us with serenity and funk together in the same breath as we leave the doors to our souls wide open to receive and relish the goodness found in this music.  Yep, that’s how this smooth groove grabbed me. In a word, inspirational.

Unfortunately, I had no promo material listing the accompanying musicians, but I can only imagine that, considering the huge number of luminaries with whom he’s worked in the past, there was also a bevy of giants here who were more than eager and willing to work on this magnificent project. They show here that they are each deserving of the roles they played.  Score yet another smash for an artist for whom I have always felt much respect and for whom I feel there has not yet been nearly enough publicity beyond the celebrity circle of fellow artists.  If you’ve not yet sampled Yandall, let this album be your introduction.
