Review: Sophisticated,breezy and down right in the groove describe the band Tri Fi, with their new CD entitled Postcards. This band has wonderful melodies, but they even give space and the sound and tempo are full and amazing. Extremely good changes and progressions play a big part in this band’s sound. They kind of move beyond that standard point of reference in trios to perplexing changes that will make your ears stand up!
Matthew Fries (piano) really adds the spice, texture and remarkable color to every tune. Nice job! Keith Hall (drums) and Phil Palombi (bass) are no lightweights either in this synopsis’s of play. It’s like they are following every move of Fries’ playing. As I am reading in the bio on these great musicians, I am amazed of their work that they have done. Palombi is right on the path, following and even writing transcriptions of the late great Scott Lafaro.This was the wonderful extraordinary bassist of the great pianist Bill Evans. These guys keep pushing the envelope on every tune to maximize, but not overdoing their creativity. They sound as if they always want to flip the timber or texture of the tune. The most interesting bands on the whole is where you think they will move next, but the have created some wonderful pattern to follow, and then take totally by surprise to a different plane! This band does this with ease!
"Postcard from Abroadis" my favorite track, as they weave their wonderful spell,going in and out of time, moving the beat to make wonderful syncopations. Hall & Palombi definitely talk to one another on this great piece. Still, like I mentioned giving such wonderful space to everyone, but again the sound is not dull or no repeating chords that get very old. Their counteractions on the subdivisions of the beat is a dream to listen to! If you want to hear a trio that goes far past what a normal trio does you need to buy this!
