Review:

A gent out of the Motor City, Detroit of course, with a background in sound engineering has sauntered on to the scene here and is offering some pretty funky gems for our listening perusal with what is apparently his first solo album Saturday Music.  He calls himself “The Maker of All Music” and while that generalization might be a stretch if taken in a universal and figurative sense, the absence of any contributing musicians’ credits on this project leads me to believe that the crystal clear sounds emanating from this album are all produced by him and him alone.

The album is quite well-produced and laced with heavy funk, manifested in heavy bass lines, powerful drums and creative keys/synth work.  He boasts that this melodic album appeals to Hip Hop, Jazz, Blues, and R&B alike.  Um…he’s spot on.  Couldn’t have said it better myself.  Yep, you guessed it. I like this one…a lot.  There are infectious tunes like the opening track “SunRiseHigh” and “Chillinease” that say: “Where are you goin’? Sit down and chill for a bit. Get a load of ‘The Maker’” Actually, that message resounds throughout the album quite clearly and unless good, solid, funky melodies coupled with some very nice slow R&B jams (like “Maysadariffiley”) don’t do it for you, you might find yourself as a captive audience. I did.  Downside? One. He just might want to take a look at his naming conventions on the next album.  Three of the titles are a genuine mouthful and mean absolutely nothing to me.  Still, I guess a “so what?” is in order because the titles take nothing away from the vibrant sound quality. “The Maker” can make more albums like this, and I’ll keep making time to listen.

Tracks: SunRiseHigh, DayInPark, Guinenifarris, Chillinease, Maysadariffiley, That's Cool, Starry Sky
