Review: André's second release has some wonderful compositions. My favorite is the Getz like tune, "Roxy Roundabout", written by pianist Adrian Clarke. André has a chance to stretch on this one and harness each phrase with delectable playing that draws the listener into the melody. "This is Celia" is a great number that seems to become more intense as the piece progresses. Some interesting moments between André, and pianist Adrian Clarke makes this number a standout. "To Love Again" is a beautiful ballad from Adrian Clarke that literally takes you to another world. It's extended lines and rich flowing texture showcase André's ballad playing.
This album has a more immediate and fuller sound than his debut. The band is different than the one on his debut CD. This does not take away from André's continuing development when it comes to song writing. Take a listen to the title track, as well as "The Grape". I have a feeling that André is writing standards that will be played by future generations of jazz musicians.
Also different on this CD are the addition of two of the great jazz standards, an upbeat version of "Lullaby of Birdland" from George Shearing, and take "The A-train" from Billy Strayhorn.
If this CD is any indication, André is poised for major recognition in the world of jazz. He will not be ignored for much longer. One of my favorites CDs so far this year, and sure to make my year end list.
