Review: For many years, Andre played with the great calypso band, Spice and Company. Now on his own with two CDs to his credit, Voyager is an upbeat debut from this talented artist. Not only is his playing appealing, but his songwriting has a catchy appeal to it.
"Wuffless" sounds a lot like early Spyro Gyra, and really swings. Infectious beats abound displaying Andre's talents on the tenor sax. Nice piano from Roger Gittens.
"One Cool Sunday" is an example of Herbie Mann's influence on Andre's flute playing. Weaving in and out of the melody with a joyous abandon. Always true to form, and enjoying every minute of it. If this doesn't get you to tap your feet and, yes get up and dance, I don't know what will. This recording is full of bouncy upbeat rhythms that will warm your heart and soul.
"She's Here" is a ballad from pianist Roger Gittens. Delicate and flowing but never sugary, Andre slows the pace and shows that he can make his horn sounding like the warm winds on a tranquil evening.
"The Paling Song" features the calypso rhythms of the islands, and reminds me of some of the great pieces that Sonny Rollins did like "St. Thomas" and "Don't stop the carnival".
Overall, this CD is worth listening to. Catchy melodies, great writing, and fine musicianship, this CD is recommended in every way...
