Review: Just before Hampton Hawes went off to prison for an 11 year narcotics sentence, he ironically recorded a group of traditional spirituals on piano. Widely regarded as one of the best of his era, Hawes was one of the hottest jazz and blues pianists of the 50’s. Originally recorded in 1958 and finally released in 1987, this beautifully remastered copy is now available for the first time on CD.
I listened to this several times before I could really appreciate what this all meant to me. At times during my listening experience I totally forgot that I was enjoying a particularly spiritual type of music. Hawes gives excellent interpretations of each song and he made it enjoyable for jazz and blues lovers alike, whether they were just music fans, or into inspirationally reflective music. I am particularly intrigued by just about any type of instrumental music; I find it more emotionally moving than music with lyrics. This music truly grabbed my heart and left a lasting impression upon me.
This man’s art ran deep into his soul, and he let all who witnessed it how intense his beliefs and love for music were.
