Musicians: Camilla Sanders (vocals); Kevin Sanders (piano); Matthew J. Rybecki (string bass); Justin Varnes (drums).
Review: It was my pleasure to review a demo CD by this artist a couple of years ago. Camilla Sanders has now issued us a copy of her new release, That Which Speaks Of Love.
The Florida raised vocalist and her husband, pianist Kevin Sanders moved to New York in 1999. Camilla is from a musical family and pursued her formal studies at the University of North Florida. Her idols were obviously, the classic jazz singers including Ella, Billie and Anita O' Day. There's a definite touch of Blossom Dearie in her voice but not in her style.
The lady certainly has an ear for fine material and great writers. Tunes by Walter Donaldson, Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael, Cole Porter and Jerome Kern add a taste of class to this debut session. I especially liked a couple of lesser known pieces in the form of I Wanna Turn Out My Light and the swinging Now Baby, Or Never.
Camilla Sanders has a light, swingin' attack that should attract a gathering of new fans. This release showcases the singer in the company of a fine jazz trio. Pianist, Kevin Sanders has appeared with Melba Moore, Joe Henderson and Dianne Reeves. This session was recorded in New York and Camilla's rendition of Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea will be featured in the film Shut Ins produced by Joanna Clare Scott. A most pleasant release!
