Review: Jazz guitar fans always appreciate a solo album. Here’s another new one.
Pablo Satek is a 30-year-old native of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The young musician earned a degree at Argentina’s Instituto Technologica de Musica Contemporanea. He later participated in workshops conducted by Scott Henderson, Sid Jacobs and bluesman, Robben Ford. The summer of 2001 found Satek in New York studying with John Abercrombie whose influence is heard on this session.
Pablo Satek winds his way through a nice blend of jazz standards and his own compositions. The guitarist tempts the listener with the Thad Jones’ beautiful A Child Is Born and follows up immediately with All The Things You Are. Now that he really has your attention, he twists, turns and skirts around the melody of Stella By Starlight. Satek’s attack is intense and the Victor Young classic receives six minutes of fascinating improvisation.
The original compositions on this CD are equally inviting. Song For Mama is a particularly beautiful piece and the technique is reminiscent of the late Lenny Breau in his early years.
Pablo Satek currently teaches at I.T.M.C. and gigs around the Argentine jazz circuit. Perhaps a promoter with foresight will bring him to a North American jazz festival soon. This is a guitarist to watch!
