Review: Guitarist Joe Finn has reassembled the quartet he led when winning the Best Jazz Instrumental Performance award from BET's Jazz Discovery Showcase in 1998. The quartet runs through eleven standards and the Finn-composed title cut, and they play with the kind of inventive cohesiveness that reflects long friendship and musical affinity.
Finn sets the pace with his bop-inspired guitar style, with an approach that's often reminiscent of Wes Montgomery, but each player offers a great deal to the mix.
There are also a pair of Finn vocals on the disc. His vocal style has been compared to Chet Baker, but to me sounds as much like an articulate Mose Alison. In either event, delivers a lyric effectively and the vocal tracks are welcome additions to the set.
