Les McCann & Eddie Harris - Swiss Movement

Eddie Harris - tenor sax
Benny Bailey - trumpet
Les McCann - piano;
Leroy Vinnegar - bass
Donald Dean - drums.

In 1969, Atlantic Records released Swiss Movement, a recording of McCann with regular collaborator and saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Bailey at that year's Montreux Jazz Festival.
The album contained the song "Compared To What," and both the album and the single were huge Billboard pop chart successes. "Compared To What" featured political criticism of the Vietnam War.

The President, he's got his war,
Folks don't know just what it's for.
Nobody gives us rhyme or reason,
Have one doubt, they call it treason

Jackie McLean - Jackie's Bag CD

By the late 1950's, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean had shaken off any comparisons to Charlie Parker (or other Parker followers), and had become a distinctive performer in his own right. JACKIE'S BAG, assembled from a couple of 1959 sessions, ... Full Descriptionis a fantastic set of hard bop originals with hints of modality (think Miles Davis from this period) and the avant-garde (think Ornette Coleman, who later recorded with McLean). The original release bolstered by three bonus tunes, BAG is full of surging, moody and ominous-sounding jazz with plenty of wonderful solos from McLean, trumpeter Donald Byrd, and the under-recorded saxophonist Tina Brooks.

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on January 18, 1959. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather and Bob Blumenthal.

Personnel: Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Tina Brooks (tenor saxophone); Donald Byrd, Blue Mitchell (trumpet); Sonny Clark, Kenny Drew (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Art Taylor, Philly Joe Jones (drums).

Ben Webster - Live At The Haarlem Jazzclub

Ben Webster - tenor saxophone
Tete Montoliu - piano
Rob Langeries - bass
Tony Inzalaco - drums

Ben Webster, accompanied by pianist Tete Montoliu from Spain, Holland's Rob Langereis on bass and German-based American Tony Inzalaco on drums.

Uncle Ben being in top form, it certainly was one of the most memorable too and by pure chance it was recorded for the local hospital radio.
Three years later these recordings were released on LP as CAT LP-1 I. This LP has been out of print for a number of years now, but demand for it never stopped. With reason, since Ben Webster's music is just as stirring and enjoyable today as it was on that very special evening at the Haarlemse Jazz Club in May 1972.

So here it is again, on CD, including the previously unreleased Perdido from the same date.

I'm listening to Diana Krall's new album "Quiet Nights," which released a few days ago (March 31). Her singing is amazing and she has a great voice meant for jazz. Her piano solos are also great too! Anyone can listen to her new songs here: http://www.iheartmusic.com/cc-common/mfeatures/dianakrallOD/?cmp=dianakrall_sa
I'm hoping that she does some collaborative work with another fav jazz artist of mine, Chris Botti. they seem perfect together because she plays the piano and sings, and Botti plays the trumpet.

I saw Bud Shank several times together with Rein de Graaff
Once Bud Shank, Pete Christlieb AND the Rein de Graaff Trio...

Bud Shank & Rein de Graaff - Alone Together

The six tracks on this record give a quiet, masterful demonstration of how to sing without a rhythm section. Almost of the tunes are ballads, originally.
But Rein and Bud decided to change the tempos.
This music was recorded before a small, select audience in a living room-like studio with no room for more musicians.
When Rein told Bud that the bassist and the drummer had a day off, he was a bit sceptical at first. A duo – would that work? But weeks later, while listening to the tapes, he reacted enthusiastically: "This is a great stuff, man!"

Jeroen de Valk (from the liner-notes)

Tracklisting:

1. Alone Together (Dieter-Schwartz) 10:20
2. I Can’t Get Started (Duke-Gershwin) 13:24
3. On The Trail (Grofe) 12:22
4. My Funny Valentine (Rodgers-Hart) 11:39
5. What’s New (Hagart-Burke) 10:24

Good to see you folks enjoying some Red Rodney. I enjoyed his work with Charlie Parker. Damn shame he had such serious issues with drugs early on that kept him out of the limelight for many years. To answer Astrid's question concerning the sound on the Parker Verve collection. Considering the time period, in one word EXCELLENT!

Right now listening to:

Blue Mitchell - Blue's Moods

The 2008 reunion of Return to Forever's classic mid-1970s line-up marked an extraordinary event for fans of progressive jazz fusion. The band built their reputation on the mind-boggling chemistry of pianist Chick Corea, bassist Stanley Clarke, ... Full Descriptiondrummer Lenny White, and guitarist Al Dimeola.

To each his/her own and all of that, but after looking at all of the pages in this topic, one cannot help but notice that most of what was posted is from the 50s and 60s. That stuff is indeed great jazz; I have some of that stuff myself.

However, I believe that to help jazz thrive today, I must buy jazz by people who are still alive. I realize that some of what was posted may have been purchased years ago. And I certainly would never tell anyone what to listen to.

Yet, to help jazz survive we must buy the new stuff. What I listed in this topic are the last several CDs I bought, because that is mostly what I have listening to. I personally prefer newer music because of the better recording technology available now.

But like I said at first, to each his/her own. I am just throwing out food for thought. Peace and goodwill.

Ben Webster - Live At The Jazzhus Vol.1 & Vol.2

Late in his career, Ben Webster recorded a series of concerts at the famed Jazzhus in Copenhagen. They are all quite inspired and memorable, not only because of Webster's unmistakable sound and lyrical sensitivity, but because of the rhythm section that backed him up on these dates.

Pianist Kenny Drew (the only other American in the group), bassist Nils-Henning Orsted-Pederson, and drummer Alex Riel all shine on this 2 CD's

Recorded January 30, 1965 live at the "Jazzhus" Monmartre, Copenhagen.

Astrid,in reference to Gumbs on the Woody Shaw release, he's pretty good as well as the whole darn band Woody was working with at the time. Carter Jefferson was awesome.

Right now listening to:

Andrew Hill - Grass Roots

Personnel, 1-5: Lee Morgan, trumpet; Booker Ervin, tenor saxophone; Andrew Hill, piano; Ron Carter, bass; Freddie Waits, drums

Personnel, 6-10: Woody Shaw, trumpet; Frank Mitchell, tenor saxophone; Andrew Hill, piano; Jimmy Ponder, guitar; Reggie Workman, bass; Idris Muhammad, drums

Recorded August 5, 1968 and April 19, 1968

Pretty accessable release considering I've never been a huge fan of Andrew Hill. That may be changing though.
