Featured Artist: Byron Miller

CD Title: I'll Come By

Year: 2004

Record Label: Big One Music

Style: Various Jazz Styles

Review:

Byron Miller has provided a marvelously rhythmic bass line behind the likes of Luther and George and Herbie and Miles, but it is here within the vessel of his own creations, with his bass in the melodic forefront, that his distinctive artistry soars.

I'll Come By has eighteen tunes, mostly composed and mostly performed on multiple instruments by Byron himself, with the welcome addition of such great guest artists as Luther Vandross, Rachelle Ferrell, George Duke, Stanley Clark, and Doc Powell. The very last tune, "See Ya," is a true example of how a bass can rival a sax or a trumpet when it is in the musical forefront commanding our attention, no matter that this album also contains a wide variety of ballad and up tunes, not the least of which, with vocals and lyrics and all, is the title tune, "I'll Come By"

If you are ready and willing to relax and listen to a singing bass, in a voice that draws deeply from the romantic heart of American Music, expressed in the dynamic percussive rhythms of that great artistic tradition called jazz, you are in for a delight.

When you're in the L.A. area you can hear Byron on any Thursday evening perform with his quintet, and hold forth as a master of ceremonies in a later night jam seesion, at the musical venue The Red, White, and Bluezz in downtown Pasadena.
